Call Script

My name is __________. I am a constituent, and my zip code is _______. I am a member of Indivisible SF.

I urge the Representative to vote NO on H.R.22, the SAVE Act, and do everything in your power to block it. This dangerous bill will disenfranchise millions of married women who have taken their husband’s name, and many other people without passports.

Background

H.R.22, the SAVE Act, has been reintroduced in the House after passing the House last year, but dying with the end of the session.

The purpose of this bill is to raise barriers and costs to deny millions of Americans access to the ballot by requiring all Americans to jump through certain hoops to prove citizenship when registering to vote.

This bill disenfranchises nearly all married women and trans Americans who do not have a REAL ID or passport, because their other primary proof of citizenship–their birth certificate–would not have a matching name. Additionally, since most California driver licenses are not REAL IDs and don’t show the bearer’s place of birth, many Americans who do not have passports will need to present another form of identification (i.e., birth certificate with your current name on it, naturalization certificate, adoption decree, etc.).

Half of American citizens do not have a valid passport, according to the Center for American Progress. Passports take time and money to obtain, and now it’s even harder with the Trump administration kneecapping federal services.

Our legislators were asleep at the wheel and allowed this bill to pass under the radar last session. We cannot afford to make the same mistake this time.

Tell your House Representative: vote NO on the SAVE Act.
